Experience in the development of mathematical models. Experience of Bayesian statistics. Experience of identifying new opportunities and applying their specialist technical knowledge into new areas. A proven record as a team player and good communications skills (even working to tight deadlines and under pressure). Demonstrated that they have started to technically lead and give advice. Able to analyse problems and provide solutions. Able to communicate complex ideas. Reviewed other's work. Successfully delivered projects and interpreted requirements of project sponsors and kept stakeholders informed. Experience of networking and building internal relationships in order to achieve results. The ability to use Mathematical and/or Statistical techniques to solve fundamental problems. The ability to produce high quality formal written deliverables and presentations as they form a key aspect of the Group's outputs. Desirable. Experience of more than one of the following areas; probability, data fusion/assimilation, empirical modelling, uncertainty propagation, numerical integration, Monte Carlo sampling techniques, programming skills (eg C++, R, Mathematica).
The purpose is to maximise the impact of science and technology on UK Defence and Security. To this end, the Hazard Assessment Simulation and Prediction (HASP) Group within the Physical Sciences Department conduct modelling, simulation and analysis activities to support defence in the event of Chemical, Biological, Radiological (CBR) releases or attacks. The Statistics and Information Management Team within the HASP group requires a Statistician to contribute and provide technical leadership to the development of several bespoke Bayesian data fusion systems and develop statistical models.
Bayesian Statistician Development of bespoke data fusion systems and statistical models of sensors, equipment and medical countermeasures used in CBR defence. You will contribute to the development of a Bayesian data fusion system which uses sequential monte carlo techniques to provide inference. You will need to liaise with scientific staff working in other disciplines to gather information on equipment and model requirements, before using your modelling skills to formulate and implement models, either using mathematical modelling packages or suitable programming languages. You will also be responsible for integrating your models into larger systems and validating your models against experimental data. Prepare customer and technical reports, and presentations. Proactively share and exploit the team's knowledge and capability. Communicate complex mathematical and statistical modelling ideas to various audiences. Act as mentor and review the work of others.
